Football 1930's
1930
The Famous Austrian ‘Wunderteam’ was formed, and they perfected the art of funnel defence, while abandoning the attacking centre-half idea. Uruguay won the first World Cup. Meanwhile, in the League, Brentford won all twenty-one of their Third Division (South) home games, a record that cannot be beaten, while Manchester United lost their first 12 matches of the season – the worst ever start to a season by a League club. Celtic goalkeeper J. Kennaway some how managed to play for three different countries in his career: Canada in 1928, USA in 1930, as well as Scotland.

1931
Arsenal won the League title with a then-record of 66 points, losing just 4 of their 42 games. Meanwhile, Aston Villa set a First Division record of 128 goals.

1932
Stanley Matthews made his debut for Stoke City, going on to play 701 League matches for them and Blackpool, before finally retiring in 1964-5 aged fifty.

1933
1933 saw players numbered for the first time in a Cup final, with Everton numbered 1-11 and Manchester City 12-22. The same year, Everton completed a rare hat trick of winning the Second Division, First Division and FA Cup in successive seasons.
1934
Italy won the World Cup in Rome, and England then beat them 3-2 at Highbury, fielding seven Arsenal players. Arsenal themselves matched Huddersfield’s record of three successive League Championship wins, while the highest scoring game in League history was played when Tranmere beat Oldham 13-4

1937
Millwall became the first Third Division side to reach the Cup semi-final, in the same year that the Scotland-England game at Hampden Park, Glasgow attracted a British Record attendance of 149,547
Celtic player Jimmy Delaney won a Scottish Cup medal in 1937, then set a unique record by going on to win an English medal with Manchester United (1948), one for Northern Ireland with Derry City (1954) and one for Eire with Cork (1956)

1939
League matches used numbers on players for the first time, and the same season saw the first and only six figure attendance in a League match in Britain, the Old firm derby in Glasgow attracting 118,597 fans.
