1880
In 1880, shinpads were first invented by Samuel Widdowson of
Nottingham Forest, and the British introduced football to Australia,
forming the Cricketer’s Club in 1889. Scottish immigrants
took football over to Canada this year also, with the Western
Association being formed also. 1882
Blackburn Rovers went 35 games without defeat, before losing
1-0 to Old Etonians in the Cup Final of all places in March
1882. Old Carthusians made history as the only team to win
both the FA Amateur Cup and FA Cup, in 1894 and 1897 respectively.
Also in 1882, the Corinthians were formed: they only admitted
public-school or university men as members, and never entered
competitions until 1923: their main objective was to improve
England’s record against Scotland, which they did successfully.
They did however also perform with great success at club level,
beating Blackburn 8-1 away when they were acknowledged to
be the best in the country, and doing the same to Preston
and Bury when they were Cup-holders, 5-0 and 10-3 respectively.
Between 1883-90, 52 lout of 88 England caps went to Corinthians
players.
1885
A football goal scoring record was sent in 1885 by J.Petrie
of Abroath, who scored 13 in one game against Bon Accord of
Aberdeen in a Scottish Cup-tie.
Professionalism also began to take a hold on the game, as
more and more Northern clubs began to pay players. Two years
previously Accrington had been expelled from the league for
making payments to a player, with the player himself being
banned for a year. In 1884, Preston North End were found to
be fielding professional players: their manager, Major Sudell,
admitted the offence before an FA committee, arguing that
he wished to build the best team in the country. In July 1885,
the FA met in Fleet Street, and professionalism was legalised.
1887
On 15th October, a Cup-tie record was set, when Preston beat
Hyde 26-0, with every player except the goalkeeper scoring.
It has been suggested that the referee accidentally let play
continue for half an hour too long however! Preston won the
Cup without conceding a goal, and won the Football League
without a defeat to their name, scoring 74 and conceding 15.
1888
On 2nd March, William McGregor wrote to several major teams
with the idea of an organised league, with set home and away
fixtures. The first twelve clubs selected to constitute the
League were Accrington, Aston Villa, Blackburn Rovers, Bolton
Wanderers, Burnley, Derby County, Everton, Notts County, Preston
North End, Stoke, West Bromwich Albion and Wolverhampton Wanderers.
All have survived in the League except Accrington. In 1892
a Second division was added, and the First Division increased
to 16 clubs. The principle of promotion and relegation of
two clubs each season soon came about.
Development of tactics and formations progressed with the
arrival of the professional game in England, and the influx
of Scottish players. The art of the throw-in was also perfected,
from a one-handed tactic to two-handed, then two-handed from
above the head whilst stationary, as too many players became
adept at throwing the ball all the way to the goalmouth!
